It’s Labor Day: The Most Ridiculous Holiday of All

POLITICS & POLICY

It doesn’t get much more ridiculous than the forced celebration (sigh) of the American worker (or any other worker). Labor Day. Please, get rid of it.

First of all, there’s absolutely no logic to celebrating a specific class of people. In America especially there aren’t supposed to be any classes at all. Perhaps there are different income groups, but that’s something else; a group does not a class make.

The entire concept of having to celebrate a working class is utterly and completely socialist. Even Marxist. Just read Wikipedia’s explanation of this holiday:

Labor Day in the United States of America is a public holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It honors the American labor movement and the power of collective action by laborers, who are essential for the workings of society.

Who are essential for the workings of society? How about entrepreneurs? Aren’t they essential? CEO’s? CFO’s? Or any other group who works and therefore produces something or delivers a service — if only by leading others and organizing their output? Are they any less “essential” Of course not. A healthy economy needs all kinds of different people, in different roles — and with different ambitions.

As for my earlier point above Marxism: Labor Day was created by the Central Labor Union. The CLU was “firmly Marxist in orientation.” In the name of that very same sick ideology, millions of innocent people have been murdered — many of whom belonged to the “labor class,” by the way.

And there’s more! Modern labor unions are using Labor Day for rather nefarious goals such as restricting workers’ free speech rights. As our own Tyler O’Neill wrote yesterday:

Workers who refuse to join a union because they disagree with the union’s political stance were forced to pay fees to the union, anyway — until the Supreme Court defended workers’ free speech last year. Now, unions and their political allies are fighting to prevent workers from leaving the unions and from opting out of paying fees.

This is the real face of a) labor unions and therefore b) of their creation, Labor Day. There’s no reason at all for conservatives to take this holiday even somewhat serious, let alone to celebrate it.
