Mitch McConnell says he will ‘absolutely’ back Trump if former president is 2024 GOP nominee

News & Politics

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Thursday that if former President Donald Trump becomes the Republican Party’s presidential nominee again in 2024, he would “absolutely” throw his support behind the former president.

But, he says, a lot could happen between now then.

What are the details?

During an interview with Fox News‘ Bret Baier, the anchor asked McConnell if he believed Trump would be the GOP nominee during the next president election as some have predicted.

“Well, there’s a lot to happen between now and ’24,” the GOP leader responded, revealing, “I’ve got at least four members that I think are planning on running for president, plus some governors and others.”

“There’s no incumbent,” he continued, telling Baier it “should be a wide open race and fun for you all to cover.”

Baier then asked directly, “If [Trump] was the party’s nominee, would you support him?”

“The nominee of the party? Absolutely,” McConnell replied.

The Hill called McConnell’s declaration a “remarkable about-face” by the Kentucky Republican, who has delivered scathing public rebukes of Trump in recent weeks over the former president’s actions surrounding the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters.

Although McConnell voted to acquit Trump on constitutional grounds during the Senate impeachment trial over the House’s charge that the former president incited the insurrection, the minority leader said in a subsequent speech from the Senate floor and in The Wall Street Journal that Trump was responsible for the attack.

Trump reacted with a blistering public statement of his own, calling McConnell an “unsmiling political hack,” and warned Republicans against listening to the longtime GOP leader.

When asked by Baier whether the Republican Party was currently in a civil war, McConnell argued that it was actually the Democrats who are at battle within their own ranks.

“I think if you’re looking for a real civil war, look at the Democrats in the House,” McConnell said. “The progressives make it extremely difficult for Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi (D-Calif.) to operate given the narrow margin she has overall in the House.”

The GOP leader repeatedly refused to engage on questions regarding former President Trump, at one point telling Baier, “What happened in the past is not something relevant now. We’re moving forward.”

  1. Really don’t want your support you 2 faced basxxxx. Go sit on your Kentucky front porch in your rocking chair and stay out of the way.

  2. is he lying some more or has the pedo joe faction finally educated him to what is good for the country. Honest Americans all know it is NOT anything from the demonrat party

  3. He is missing a few words when he says “Back”……. what he meant was “Stab in the Back”. He, along with Kavanaugh and Amy Barrett, have turned out to be anti-Patriot socialist commies. “Supreme Court” ? What a damned joke. Get rid of every damned one of them. … and ALL 538 “members of Congress”…. ALL spineless, ball-less socialist commie morons who feed from the TAXPAYERS’ slop trough every day. They would have a good life in Venezuela.

  4. Old fools like Mitch Bernie and Biden should enjoy the rest of their waste of life because they will spend eternity in hot fires.

  5. “The GOP leader repeatedly refused to engage on questions regarding former President Trump, at one point telling Baier, “What happened in the past is not something relevant now. We’re moving forward.””

“We’re moving forward”, is there a subliminal message in this part of McConnell’s statement, of “moving forward”, like McConnell showing his true colors? A RINO?

  6. Mitch is “toast”…. had the Republicans backed Trump through his Presidency he would have accomplished even more, had they fought against things like social media censorship, massive mail in voting and other illegal election crap the election wouldn’t have been stolen, had they supported the fight for election accountability Trump would still be in office, and had they followed Trumps suggestion on the stimulus payments we wouldn’t have lost two Senate seats in Georgia. We are where we are now because the Republicans let it happen, as a leader of the party Mitch holds a lion’s share of the blame. He needs to go to send a clear message to the other do nothing Rinos.

  7. Hopefully he will not have a chance to he will have his backstabbing a$$ thrown out of any government position by then

  8. Unfortunately, McConnell is a long term ‘politics as usual’ politician. He will say whatever he thinks people want to hear. He had a problem with former President Trump, who was an outsider, and didn’t play the normal political game. Trump was a businessman who looked at the bottom line. When he was President his bottom line became the good of the American People. His East Coast personality rubbed people the wrong way. It was a culture shock for many people, (my husband was from NJ, so I know of what I speak), who weren’t used to a politician who said something, then within the limits of his power, actually did what he said. Today’s long term power hungry politicians had a real problem with that. He didn’t play the game right. He also saw the insidious creeping of the radical left sneaking into our everyday lives. He then proceeded to call out those very politicians on their graft, and favor buying. He was a wake up call for the silent majority American who, though they were mostly raised on polite manners, as to what was happening. They really, really, didn’t want the general public know how many fields, (education, foreign policy, etc), the left had eroded. Oh, we heard about incidental isolated cases, but the Corp, and social, media, had turned into puppets, following the ‘woke’ policies, before ‘woke’ was woke’. McConnell is just now realizing the American freedom loving majority is awake. One

  9. Well, that’s certainly a wild reversal from gitchy mitchy’s blather a few weeks ago; sorry, he’s NOT TO BE TRUSTED to keep his word. He’s married to communist Elaine Chao, former director of US DOT. Her parents are wealthy CCP connected Chinese government and “they” dictate his every move with their own $$$.

  10. I will not donate to the RNCC/GOP until and unless Mitch McConnell is replaced as Senate Minority Leader! He road the coat tails of Donald J. Trump, to get re-elected and then proved himself disloyal to the POTUS! Now though, he claims, that he’ll support Trump in 2024. Mitch McConnell must go now!!!

  11. Just like a “honey bun”, sweet and sugary on the outside, utterly useless on the inside. He has other “buns” with him in the Senate. The only Senator worth his salt is Joe Manchin. It would appear he thinks for himself and doesn’t tow the party line. We need more people like him!
