Minnesota lawmaker proposes law to strip convicted protesters of food stamps, unemployment benefits, and other gov’t programs

News & Politics

A Minnesota state lawmaker wants to strip convicted protesters of their access to government programs, including food stamps, student loans, and health care.

Republican state Sen. David Osmek authored the legislation as the nation awaits a decision in the jury trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who was charged in the death of George Floyd.

After a long day of closing arguments, the jurors deliberated about four hours before retiring for the night to the hotel where they are being sequestered for this final phase of the trial, the Associated Press reported. They were slated to resume Tuesday morning.

“A person convicted of a criminal offense related to the person’s illegal conduct at a protest, demonstration, rally, civil unrest, or march is ineligible for any type of state loan, grant, or assistance, including but not limited to college student loans and grants, rent and
mortgage assistance, supplemental nutrition assistance, unemployment benefits and other employment assistance, Minnesota supplemental aid programs, business grants, medical assistance, general assistance, and energy assistance,” read the bill.

Ahead of the jury deliberations, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) was criticized for appearing to incite violence with her comments in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, demanding that protesters become “more confrontational” if Chauvin is acquitted of murder.

“We got to stay on the street,” the 82-year-old said during a protest on Sunday. “And we’ve got to get more active. You’ve got to get more confrontational. You got to make sure that they know we mean business.”

Many called out Waters for the irresponsible comments, but the most damning response came from Judge Peter Cahill, who is presiding over the Chauvin trial. Cahill called the comments “abhorrent” while admonishing lawmakers to be more respectful to the judicial branch in accordance with their oath to defend the Constitution.

“A congresswoman’s opinion really doesn’t matter a whole lot. Anyway,” Cahill said in court.

The Minnesota bill is not likely to pass with Democrats controlling the state House and the governor’s office.

  1. This is the best Bill I have heard of. Don’t forget to take all gun rights from these people too. That should stop some of the problems we have with guns. Owning and carrying a gun is our right. But when you disobey the laws of the country….
Maxine Waters is part of the problem. She needs a very long vacation to China.

    1. Big Dave , I agree with you also we need to get the trouble makers off the streets and only law abiding citizens should have Guns and the officers too should have the right to go home to their families after their shifts too. My son did not get the chance to come home after his shift. Waters needs to be arrested for what she said , she is trying to get riots going on and that is against the laws of our country . LOCK HER UP!! These Gangs need to be incarcerated and not let out, throw away the keys. I know what it is like to bury my child. so as far as I am concerned the officers have a perfect right to defend them selves and use what ever force in needed in their opinion. They are men and women just like all of us and they have families that never get over the loss of their Sons or Daughters who are killed while Protecting & Serving the rest of we law abiding citizens.

  2. On the surface it looks good. Who declares it as a riot, civil disturbance. How many get actually convicted. It is a slippery slopethat can turn one sided, depending who is in control.

  3. If no effort to either arrest and or prosecute these “peaceful” protesters what’s the point? It must be the drinking water.

  4. An elected official who willfully and blatentely calls for violence, under any circumstances should be placed in a cell and throw the key away. Waters is known for her radical opinions yet has never been called to the carpet for it. How could this jury make a decision like this with this hanging over their heads?
The radical left has no problem with this behavior, yet they impeached Donald Trump after calling for peaceful marches over the stolen election.
WHY ARE THERE 2 STANDARDS IN THIS COUNTRY, AND WHY DO WE ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN?
Where is the Speaker of the House not putting this radical representative in her place and why is she allowing this to continue after Waters called for violence against Republican cabinet members and now this??
With the lawmakers acting like this, we are headed straight to another “BANANA REPUBLIC”
    GOD HELP US ALL!!!!!
