Lawmakers Urged Google To ‘Fix’ Abortion Searches

News & Politics

A report from Reuters said U.S. lawmakers urged Google to “fix” abortion searches.

Sen. Mark Warner and Rep. Elissa Slotkin were among the 14 senators and 7 representatives that sent the letter to Google regarding the searches. All were Democrats.

“NEW: @RepSlotkin and I are leading a group of lawmakers to push on the Google CEO to crack down on manipulative search results that lead to scammy “crisis pregnancy centers,’” Warner tweeted. “It’s time for them to limit or label results and ads that lead to fake abortion clinics.”

The letter sternly lectured the company for showing “misleading” results.

“Google should not be displaying anti-abortion fake clinics or crisis pregnancy centers,” the letter read. “If Google must continue showing these misleading results…the results should, at the very least, be appropriately labeled.”

Google’s response was complacent.

“Any organization that wants to advertise to people seeking information about abortion services on Google must be certified and show in-ad disclosures that clearly state whether they do or do not offer abortions,” Google spokesperson Nicolas Lopez told The Verge. “We’re always looking at ways to improve our results to help people find what they’re looking for, or understand if what they’re looking for may not be available.”

This is not the first letter Democrats sent to Google regarding the issue.

NewsBusters reported last month that Democrats demanded that Google stop collecting the location data of women who obtained an abortion:

“The letter indicates that lawmakers want Google to keep location private so that women who live in states where abortion is or becomes illegal can kill their babies without getting caught. It’s ironic that lawmakers want to help people break the law…Contributors to the letter included an unsurprising slew of baby killing enthusiasts. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) signed it and thinks that pro-life laws contribute to ‘rape culture.’ Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who was caught having a rage-filled temper tantrum outside the Supreme Court, signed the letter too. None other than Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) signed it and thinks that overturning Roe is a ‘draconian infringement on women’s freedom and privacy.’ Almost 40 more anti-life pols signed the letter too.”
