WOW! Facebook Oversight Board Received Over 1 Million Appeals on Company’s ‘Content Moderation’

The oligarchs on Facebook’s oversight board released their first annual report, shedding light on the company’s bloated censorship operation.

The Meta Oversight Board’s annual report revealed it received “more than a million appeals” on the company’s “content moderation decisions” between October 2020 and December 2021. More than 8 in 10 of user appeals to restore content to Facebook or Instagram involved Meta’s so-called “rules on bullying, hate speech or violence & incitement.” The number of appeals totaled a whopping 1,152,181. On average, the board received a reported 2,649 cases a day. Meta is the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

MRC Free Speech America’s CensorTrack database has logged 3,975 cases of censorship as of Thursday morning; 1,016 (26 percent) of those cases were from Facebook alone. The Oversight Board’s report shows that the 1,016 cases in the CensorTrack database don’t even scratch the surface of Facebook’s obsession with censorship.

The report showed users appealed the out of control Facebook censorship in mass numbers. “Of the cases submitted, 99% related to content on Facebook, while just 1% concerned content on Instagram,” according to the report. Even more revealing was that starting in the second quarter of 2021, “after users were empowered to appeal to the Board to remove other people’s content, 94% of user appeals were to restore content to Facebook or Instagram.” [Emphasis added.]

At least 49 percent of the appeals arose from users based in the U.S. or Canada. In addition, “[b]etween Q2 and Q3 2021, the number of appeals grew by 64%,” according to the report. “In one week beginning Monday, August 30, 2021, users set a record for most cases submitted in a single week, by making over 32,000 separate appeals to the Board.”

The board also patted itself on the back for “[u]phold[ing] former President Donald Trump’s suspension from Facebook and Instagram but criticiz[ing] the platform’s ‘indefinite’ penalty” across those Meta platforms.

The board claims it is designed to protect “freedom of expression” by providing an “independent check on Meta’s content moderation.” [Emphasis added].

In addition, the board claims its members “will exercise neutral, independent judgment and render decisions impartially.” However, MRC Free Speech America research has shown this is not the case, as the board seats globalist radicals. Here are two glaring examples:

  1. Meta board member and Pakistani lawyer Nighat Dad tweeted in 2016: “God forbid if Trump becomes the president, this will be my last visit to US #TrumpWantsTheWall.” She didn’t stop there, tweeting at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, “The world needs to build a wall around you and Trump and never let you both come out. #BanTrump.”
  2. Meta board member, Yemeni activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Tawakkol Karman admitted she was “partial to” the Muslim Brotherhood, according to a clip cut by The Middle East Media Research Institute. The brotherhood has ties to the terror group Hamas and is itself deemed as a “terror organization by several countries including Saudi Arabia, Russia and Bahrain,” according to the Jerusalem Post. Trump proposed designating the Muslim Brotherhood a terror group in 2019.
