‘You should resign’: GOP Sen. Josh Hawley calls upon DHS Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas to step down

Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas telling the secretary that he should resign in light of the situation at America’s southern border.

The lawmaker pointed to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data which indicates that there have been more than 2 million southwest land border encounters during the period running from October 2021 through August 2022.

“And these are only the official statistics, which fail to capture the many got-aways who evaded detection. After two years on the job, you have demonstrated that you have no intention of enforcing our immigration laws,” Hawley declared in the letter. “Your intentional disregard for our country’s immigration laws makes you unfit to remain in office. You should resign.”

Bill Melugin of Fox News has noted that the “numbers do NOT include known gotaways, which DHS sources tell us are already well over 500,000 for FY’22 so far.”

Hawley told the DHS secretary in person that he thought he should resign earlier this year.

Dozens of House GOP lawmakers called for Mayorkas to resign in a letter in February.

More than a dozen GOP state attorneys general also joined together in a February letter calling for Mayorkas to resign from his post.

The federal government’s failure to secure the southern border represents a serious public safety threat due to the risk that criminals will gain entry into the U.S. and commit heinous acts.

Border Patrol agents routinely capture previously convicted sex offenders — for example, an individual apprehended earlier this month had been “convicted, in December 2021 in California, of lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years of age,” according to a CBP press release which also noted that the man had been “deported in June 2022.”

Inadequate border security also enables the smuggling of deadly drugs into the U.S. GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida has called for the U.S. to bomb the Sinaloa Cartel in order to tackle America’s fentanyl problem. “Bomb Sinaloa. Not kidding,” Gaetz tweeted on Wednesday.
