Hostin Blames DOJ for Speaker Gridlock, Need to Arrest Holdouts for J6

Friday was both the second anniversary of January 6 and day four of congressional gridlock on electing the next speaker of the House, with 20 Republican holdouts opposing California Congressman Kevin McCarthy’s (R) bid. Racist co-host Sunny Hostin’s hot take was that the Department of Justice was to blame because they didn’t arrest those 20 lawmakers (and former President Trump) for what happened on January 6, 2021, and were “shameful” for not doing so.

Hostin suggested McCarthy was “taking his political aspirations to a new level. He’s putting vanity before the country, before his party.”

She then shifted to talking about what she felt was the cause of the gridlock, that being the inaction from the Department of Justice against members of Congress. “I think the reason that these election deniers that are still in Congress are holding their party hostage is because there has been no accountability for January 6. I think that is why they have the power that they have,” she proclaimed.

“And it’s shameful that the Justice Department quite frankly” has not arrested them, she added as the far-left audience clapped and cheered.

Acting moderator Joy Behar noted that the DOJ had prosecuted rioters, but Hostin and faux conservative Alyssa Farah Griffin teamed up to argue it was not enough and Trump and members of Congress needed to be behind bars:

BEHAR: Well, they have been for some people who were insurrectionists.

HOSTIN: Some people, I mean, there have been 900-some-odd people that have been prosecuted for crimes related to January 6.

GRIFFIN: But not the powerful ones.

HOSTIN: But not the powerful ones, and not the enablers, and not the chief orchestrator of it, Donald J. Trump! I mean, he needs to go to jail!

Hostin is a former federal prosecutor who hasn’t practiced in years, yet she seems to think she’s at the top of her game, declaring: “I would’ve had enough evidence last year to go forward. I don’t know the dragging of the feet.”

With help from co-host Sara Haines, the conversation meandered to accusations that the DOJ was playing politics that somehow benefited Republicans.

“I don’t know, from a legal standpoint, what more they need,” Hostin whined. “They already have criminal referrals for the enablers. They have criminal referrals for this President. They have all these points of election reform that they should take up immediately. And no one’s really doing anything. That’s why everyone’s run amok.”

JOY BEHAR: Okay. So, Sunny, why do you think he [Rep. Kevin McCarthy 9R-CA)] still wants it?

SUNNY HOSTIN: I think he’s just taking his political aspirations to a new level. He’s putting vanity before the country, before his party –

BEHAR: But if Lauren Boebert could get rid of him.

HOSTIN: He’s given away the power of the position other than the title of the position, right? So, it’s ridiculous.

But I got to say, I think the reason that these election deniers that are still in Congress are holding their party hostage is because there has been no accountability for January 6. I think that is why they have the power that they have.

[Applause]

And it’s shameful that the Justice Department quite frankly —

BEHAR: Well, they have been for some people who were insurrectionists.

HOSTIN: Some people, I mean, there have been 900-some-odd people that have been prosecuted for crimes related to January 6.

ALYSSA FARAH GRIFFIN: But not the powerful ones.

HOSTIN: But not the powerful ones, and not the enablers, and not the chief orchestrator of it, Donald J. Trump! I mean, he needs to go to jail!

[Applause]

And like I said to Representative Schiff yesterday, as a former prosecutor, I would’ve had enough evidence last year to go forward. I don’t know the dragging of the feet.

[Crosstalk]

BEHAR: So what now, is holding it up?

SARA HAINES: It’s all politicking —

HOSTIN: It must be.

BEHAR: Why would the Justice Department need to do politics?

HOSTIN: Well, they’ve appointed a special counsel, and, you know, they have all the evidence. They have been conducting a parallel investigation. I don’t know, from a legal standpoint, what more they need. They already have criminal referrals for the enablers. They have criminal referrals for this President. They have all these points of election reform that they should take up immediately. And no one’s really doing anything. That’s why everyone’s run amok.
