An Alaska woman is lucky to have suffered only minor injuries after a moose charged her from behind and kicked her in the head.
As is the case three times a day, Tracy Hansen and her dog Gunner were out on February 16, walking their usual route through Anchorage. At some point during their walk, they passed a moose, but as they live in Alaska, Hansen didn’t think much of it.
But several moments later, the moose began charging toward Hansen, gaining speed as it lumbered along the sidewalk. Suddenly, the moose reared up on its hind legs and kicked Hansen in the back of the head.
“I thought someone had not been paying attention and hit me with a bike or something,” Hansen recalled. She said she later realized that it was likely the moose that she had recently passed: “Knowing that the moose had been somewhere behind me, and now here this moose is in front of me, and I’m like, ‘Was that the moose?'”
Luckily, video footage captured by fellow Anchorage resident Kate Timmons left no doubt. The Timmons family had been driving along the road when Kate grabbed her cell phone to play a song for her daughter. The family then spotted the moose, and Kate began filming. “You guys, this moose is chasing this person,” Timmons said before realizing that that person was soon in danger.
“Watch out! Watch out!” Timmons cried as the moose attacked Hansen.
After chasing the moose away, the Timmons family pulled over and quickly helped Hansen, getting her and her dog out of the snow and into their truck. They took the pair to Hansen’s home and then called for help.
Hansen suffered several bruises in the attack and had to have three staples put in to close a head wound. Though she still experiences some headaches, she is on the road to recovery.
Hansen and Timmons reunited last Sunday to discuss their encounter, which both women believe did not happen by chance. “Kate and I were discussing that the Lord put her in the right place, in the right time to be able to help,” Hansen insisted.
Hansen also affirmed that one, little run-in with a 6-foot, 1,000-lb animal won’t keep her and Gunner from doing what they love. “We’ll be back on our normal walks,” she said. “The moose won’t stop that.”
