Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel hosted the 95th Oscars recently, making jokes about sexism, “QAnon,” and even the events at the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
A week prior to the awards ceremony, footage of the Capitol riot was revealed from interior security cameras that appeared to contradict the narrative put forth by the January 6 committee. The footage, presented by Tucker Carlson on his nightly show, showed a man named Jacob Chansley appearing to be escorted around the government building by two police officers.
This prompted prominent figures including Elon Musk to call for Chansley to be released from prison. Musk said, “Chansley was falsely portrayed in the media as a violent criminal who tried to overthrow the state and who urged others to commit violence. But here he is urging people to be peaceful and go home.”
“I was shocked to learn that they were lying intentionally,” Carlson told host Glenn Beck regarding the footage.
However, at the Oscars, Kimmel mocked the new footage, implying that it was an editing trick:
“Editors do amazing things. Editors can turn 44,000 hours of violent insurrection footage into a respectful sightseeing tour of the Capitol,” the host joked.
While the joke should be treated as such, Kimmel does indeed take shots at Fox News’ Tucker Carlson on a regular basis. In a recent video on the talk show’s YouTube channel titled “Pro-Russia Tucker Takes on Kimmel, George the Girl Scout Santos & Marjorie Taylor Greene ‘Attacked,'” Kimmel blamed Carlson, along with “Trump and his buddies” for a rise in “anti-Asian sentiment and even violence” for suggesting that the COVID-19 virus leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China.
Kimmel’s YouTube channel features a large catalogue of videos about Carlson, including many insulting titles and thumbnails featuring Carslon’s face, such as “Moscow Mule,” “Man Karen,” and “Little Dumber Boy.”
At the Oscars, Kimmel’s monologue featured a few other cultural tags, including referring to a “QAnon Reddit page” when talking about the recent Elvis movie.
Regarding director James Cameron not being nominated for an Oscar, Kimmel joked that “some of the cynics say that Jim Cameron isn’t here because he didn’t get a Best Director nomination … I mean, how does the Academy not nominate a guy who directed ‘Avatar’? What do they think he is, a woman?”
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis injected some transgender ideology before the night was finished, asking, “How do you include everyone when there are binary choices, which is very difficult, and as the mother of a trans daughter, I completely understand that.”
