Video: Pair of crooks armed with gun — and even an axe — try robbing store, breaking into ATM. But they lay a big ol’ egg instead.

News & Politics

Two males wearing masks and hoodies — and armed with a handgun and an axe — tried robbing a convenience store in southwest Philadelphia last week and breaking into an ATM inside the store. But things did not exactly pan out for the dynamic duo.

What are the details?

Police said the pair entered the Maranatha Grocery Store in the 7200 block of West Passyunk Avenue shortly before 6 a.m. Friday. Surveillance video shows one of them carrying into the store an open wooden box containing an axe.

Strangely the box is soon leaning against a wall with the axe seemingly in full view of anyone behind the counter.

Video then shows the other suspect pulling out a handgun and pointing it through the transparent structure at the counter. Police said the gunman demanded money from the store employee.

Then the other suspect is seen on the clip grabbing the axe from the open box and running over to the ATM. Police said he attempted to break it open.

While the surveillance video freezes, police said they weren’t able to gain access to the ATM.

Soon they’re seen with their hands in their pockets and apparently just staring at the impregnable cash-dispensing contraption.

Oh, what could have been.

Police added that the pair eventually fled the scene without taking anything.

A similar failed caper took place in Philadelphia in December, as four black-clad crooks — at least one of whom was armed with a gun — attempted to break into an ATM sitting inside a gas station.

Despite their persistent efforts — kicking and pounding and tugging on the ATM as surveillance video recorded it all — the crew eventually gave up and ran back to their getaway vehicles.
