Comedian Chris Rock took aim at the possible arrest of Donald Trump, joking that those who may arrest him are “stupid” because they will likely just make the former president more popular.
As has been widely reported, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a Democrat whose campaign was reportedly funded largely by George Soros, is considering indicting Trump for hush money he paid to porn star Stormy Daniels back in 2016 to cover up an alleged affair.
On Sunday, Rock was on hand at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., where a crowd of comedians, actors, and politicians gathered to honor Adam Sandler with the Mark Twain Prize, given to “the world’s greatest humorists.” During his comedic routine, Rock poked fun at a series of politicians, including Trump — and those thinking of arresting him.
“Are you stupid?” Rock, 58, joked to a crowd which included notable Democrats such as Rep. Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and some members of the Biden administration.
“Are you guys really going to arrest Trump?” Rock asked. “Do you know this is only going to make him more popular?
“It’s like arresting Tupac. He’s just gonna sell more records,” Rock explained, referencing the late rapper Tupac Shakur, who was gunned down in Las Vegas in 1996.
Rock even called the hush-money payment a “romantic” gesture meant to keep former first lady Melania Trump from finding out about her husband’s alleged affair. “We’ve all been cheated on,” Rock continued. “Don’t you wish that the person that cheated on you paid off somebody so you wouldn’t find out?”
“That’s romantic!” Rock insisted.
Despite warning Dems that indicting Trump would be a major misstep, Rock did not defend Trump’s record in office.
“Trump was so bad as a president, he was so bad that Joe Biden had to burst off a monument. Biden was dead for 16 years,” Rock said, poking fun at Biden’s age.
At 78 and almost two months, Biden was the oldest president ever to assume office when he was sworn in on January 20, 2021. He is now 80. Should Trump win re-election in 2024, he will be 78 and about seven months when he is inaugurated in January 2025.
During the award ceremony, various comedians made reference to the current socio-political climate, which often punishes them for criticizing woke culture and the politicians who support it.
“In these woke times we live in, the one person who would not win the Mark Twain Prize was Mark Twain,” quipped David Spade, who spent several seasons alongside Adam Sandler on “Saturday Night Live.” “He had some iffy material.”
“[I]t’s more hypersensitive than it’s ever been,” Sandler, 56, admitted in his acceptance speech, “but we’re gonna be alright.”
In addition to his time on “SNL,” Sandler is perhaps best known for a series of comedy movies he made in the 1990s and 2000s, including “The Wedding Singer,” “Billy Madison,” “Happy Gilmore,” “Grown Ups,” which also starred Rock, and “The Longest Yard.” He has recently appeared in several Netflix movies, including “Murder Mystery” with Jennifer Aniston, who also attended the Mark Twain Prize ceremony.
