Detention officer caught on video engaging in improper sexual behavior with inmate after shakedown at Georgia jail unearths contraband phone

A Georgia detention officer is facing more than a dozen charges stemming from an inappropriate relationship with an inmate. Video shows the detention officer engaging in improper sexual behavior with an inmate, according to police. The video was reportedly discovered on a contraband phone that was found during a shakedown at the Fulton County Jail.

A shakedown took place at the Fulton County Jail on Jan. 28, according to an arrest warrant obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The search effort unearthed 11 contraband cellphones. One of the illegal phones reportedly contained video of a detention officer, Kawana Jenkins, 36, engaging in lewd behavior with an inmate.

In the video, Jenkins is reportedly sitting on the lap of Jamal Ward — an inmate accused of murder. Jenkins allegedly is seen licking and kissing the inmate’s face. According to the arrest warrant, Jenkins supplies Ward with a pair of Cartier glasses.

In March, another phone was confiscated from the jail, and that device allegedly also had a video of Jenkins engaging in improper sexual behavior with an inmate, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Jenkins is purportedly seen on video licking and sucking Ward’s finger.

Jenkins was arrested on Monday after she was identified as the detention officer in the risqué video. WSB-TV reported that Jenkins was terminated and charged with five counts of violation of oath by a public officer, two counts of improper sexual contact by an employee or agent, two counts of reckless conduct, two counts of cruelty to inmates, and one count of giving an inmate a prohibited item without authorization.

Jenkins was booked into the jail where she used to work. Her bond was set at $135,000.

Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat said in a statement, “As Sheriff of Fulton County, I am committed to transparency and to holding each and every employee accountable to [the] oath they have taken to protect and serve our community. The actions of this one individual are certainly not a reflection of the men and women of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office. The vast majority of employees are to be commended for their integrity, commitment to service and the work they do day in and day out.”

Jenkins had been an employee of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office since December 2019.
