Students accused of physically attacking teachers in separate incidents on same day; one teacher, in her 60s, was hospitalized

News & Politics

Students in separate incidents Wednesday in two states were accused of physically attacking teachers — one of whom, a woman in her 60s, was hospitalized.

What happened in the first incident?

Two teenage girls were accused of attacking a substitute teacher at Turning Point Academy, WSOC-TV reported, citing North Carolina’s Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

The 16- and 17-year-old students were charged with assault and disorderly conduct after they “got aggressive toward a teacher,” the station said, citing the school district.

The teacher told WSOC she suffered injuries to her head, neck, and hand.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers responded to the school and didn’t find any weapons, the station added.

According to the school’s website, Turning Point is a “redirection” program for “at-risk” students that uses therapeutic intervention services, behavior and academic prevention, and intervention programs. The school “is available as an alternative education option for students with long-term or 365-day suspensions and/or as a disciplinary reassignment for students who have committed serious violations of the Code of Student Conduct,” the website says, adding that students are assigned to Turning Point Academy for a determined period of time or until they meet stated goals and then return to the home school.

What happened in the second incident?

A 14-year-old student attacked a teacher at Alderwood Middle School in Lynnwood, Washington, KOMO-TV reported.

The teacher, a woman in her 60s, was seriously injured and hospitalized, officials told the station, adding that no weapon was used in the attack.

Following the attack, officers arrested the student, who was taken to Denny Youth Center in Everett and booked on an assault charge, KOMO noted.

The station added that there was no information on what led to the attack.

Anything else?

A Georgia teacher was brutally attacked by a ninth-grade girl in January and then hospitalized and was said to be unable to walk. The student was charged with aggravated battery. The vicious beatdown at Heritage High School in Conyers was caught on video.

In addition, a female teacher’s aide at Matanzas High School in Palm Coast, Florida, was rendered unconscious and seriously injured last month after a male student standing 6 feet, 6 inches tall and weighing 270 pounds brutally attacked her. The 17-year-old student was charged with felony aggravated battery with bodily harm and taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
