2-year-old girl dies in tornado just as her mom gives birth to her baby brother: ‘Pray for us’

A Mississippi family is devastated after a tornado recently killed one little girl and severely injured her cousin, just as her mother was giving birth to new life.

On Friday, Dominique Green dropped her 2-year-old daughter, Aubrey, off at her parents’ mobile home in Silver City, Mississippi, a small town of just a few hundred people about an hour north of Jackson. As Green was on her way to the hospital to give birth to her second child, her parents, whose names have not been reported, agreed to watch little Aubrey, even though they were also watching their own two children, ages 10 and 11, and three other grandchildren: Kaleb, 8, Kelsey, 7, and Kensley, 1.

Just a few hours after Aubrey joined her seven relatives at the mobile home, an EF-4 tornado ripped through the community, destroying nearly everything in its path and leaving dozens of casualties in its wake. According to JoAnn Winston, Aubrey’s great-aunt who lived in the same mobile home park, the tornado hit without warning.

“I heard something like a train. … My older son was saying, ‘Get down on the floor! Get down on the floor!'” Winston recalled.

After it was over, Winston stepped outside to see her sister’s home gone and little Aubrey in grave condition in the wreckage. Though EMTs attempted lifesaving measures, Aubrey had already passed away from her injuries, just a few hours before her mother gave birth to her brother at the hospital.

Sadly, the family’s tragedy did not end there. Young Kaleb, Aubrey’s cousin, was also severely injured in the storm. His mother, Jessica Drain, described the horrifying moment when she learned that her son had been hurt.

“They told me that my son was bleeding out of his head, he was laying there, he had a seizure, his eyes rolled to the back of his head,” Drain said, adding that she felt “pain, hurt and frustration for not being able to get to my son or my niece [Aubrey] in time.”

Kaleb remains on a ventilator in intensive care. He is expected to undergo several more surgeries in the future.

In addition, Kaleb’s and Aubrey’s great-uncle, JoAnn Winston’s brother, died of a heart attack on Sunday. Authorities do not believe his death is related to the storm, which reportedly claimed the lives of at least 26 people in Mississippi alone.

“The only thing I can say is for people just to pray for us,” Winston said, “and just pray that we get through this.”
