A Florida woman has reportedly accused American Airlines of losing track of her two children who were set to fly to upstate New York when their flight was canceled. She claimed that her children were made to stay in a jail-like holding area overnight, with no food or water.
Amber Vencill, the mother of 10- and 12-year-old boys, has filed a civil lawsuit against the airline company, claiming that her sons were left without food, water, blankets, or pillows during their overnight stay with the airline. The incident apparently happened on July 30, 2022, according to the New York Post.
The boys were set to fly out of Missouri to upstate New York, where Vencill’s partner intended to pick them up after a layover in Charlotte, North Carolina. However, the flight was delayed and soon canceled. The company allegedly contacted Ted, the mother’s partner, informing him that the children would have a nice room to themselves, including beds and their own restroom.
Not long after, the airline company sent an email to Vencill at 11:40 p.m. on July 30, informing her that her two children would be on a flight set for 5:00 p.m. the following day. The conflicting information left Vencill with “no idea what flight her children would be on,” according to Daily Mail.
The phone number that was provided by American Airlines for Vencill to get in touch with her children turned out to be a dead end, as she was unable to speak with them. She was eventually able to get in contact with her children after an employee at Charlotte Douglas International Airport helped her out.
When Vencill was finally able to speak with her sons, one of them revealed to her the disturbing details about the situation, noting that they had not eaten since the day before. They were apparently not even given snacks provided on planes.
The employee who helped Vencill get in touch with her children was able to get them food and drink, according to the report.
Vencill was apparently refunded $150 for the unaccompanied minors’ expenses. The children are now said to be afraid to get on an airplane, according to the lawsuit.
“Particularly offensive is that after learning of their clear failures, defendant merely offered a hollow apology and a refund, in essence telling plaintiff, sorry we lost your kids lady but here is your money back,” the lawsuit continued.
When the Post reached out to American Airlines for comment about the debacle, the compoany said that “the safety and comfort of our customers, including unaccompanied minors in our care, are our highest priorities and we’re committed to providing a positive experience to everyone who travels with us.”
The airline noted that it had been in touch with Vencill and is currently looking over the details of the lawsuit.
It is uncertain how much in damages the mother is seeking.
