Lauren Boebert says she’d be willing to scrap motion to vacate if Jim Jordan becomes House speaker

News & Politics

GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado announced that she would be willing to scuttle the motion to vacate if Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio becomes speaker of the House.

“I’m willing to ditch the Motion To Vacate with @Jim_Jordan as Speaker,” Boebert tweeted.

“There is a section of the conference that won’t vote for ANY Speaker until this rule is removed. It is a mechanism based to ensure promises are kept by the Speaker. I’m willing to get rid of the rule if we get a Speaker who is trustworthy – and Jim Jordan is absolutely trustworthy. Can’t get him to 218 if many in the conference simply refuse anything until MTV is removed,” she added in another post.

Jordan and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) have both mounted speakership bids in the wake of Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s recent removal from the post.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fl.) instigated the McCarthy ouster by proposing a resolution declaring the office of the House speaker to be vacant. He was able to make the move since the threshold for a motion to vacate is currently just one member. Gaetz and seven other GOP lawmakers then joined with Democrats to vote in favor of booting McCarthy from the speakership.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has said that he hopes the next House speaker nixes the motion to vacate. “I think it makes the speaker’s job impossible,” he said.

“Here’s a compelling reason why the House should NOT give up the motion-to-vacate rule,” Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah wrote in response to McConnell’s comments.

Former President Donald Trump told Fox News Digital that he would be willing to serve as House speaker temporarily if Republicans are unable to arrive at a consensus candidate to take on the role. “I will do it if necessary, should they not be able to make their decision,” he said, according to the outlet.
