Ten Most Popular Governors in the Country Are Republicans

POLITICS & POLICY

Every day, Morning Consult surveys 5,000 Americans about whether or not they are happy with their governor. Once a quarter, they release the data showing the rankings — and for the first quarter of 2019, all ten of the ten most popular governors in the U.S. are Republicans.

Leading the list is Charlie Baker of Massachusetts, who has a 73 percent favorability rating, and he’s followed closely by Larry Hogan of Maryland, who has the approval of 71 percent of respondents in his state. Rounding out the top ten are Chris Sununu (N.H.), Kay Ivey (Ala.), Phil Scott (Vt.), Asa Hutchison (Ark.), Henry McMaster (S.C.), Greg Abbott (Texas), Doug Burgum (N.D.), and Bill Lee (Tenn.).

By contrast, just three out of the ten most unpopular governors in the country are Republicans. As of this year, there are 27 GOP governors in the U.S. and 23 Democratic governors. Eleven states will hold gubernatorial elections in 2020, seven of which are for seats currently held by Republicans, three of whom made the top ten in the new Morning Consult data.
