House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) addressed the rise in organized looting incidents, but she said that she didn’t know where the “attitude of lawlessness” springs from.
Pelosi was asked about the spree of “smash and grab” robbery incidents in San Francisco, California, during her regular media briefing.
“It’s absolutely outrageous and obviously it cannot continue,” said Pelosi.
“But the fact is that there is an attitude of lawlessness in our country that springs from I don’t know where, maybe you do, and we cannot have that lawlessness become the norm. They coordinate with each other and they plan traffic patterns and the rest so that they can reach their goal and depart very quickly,” she explained.
“And some of it is high level stores, as the retailers have told us,” she added, “and some of it is your local Walgreens, but none of it is acceptable and again, it has to be stopped.
Pelosi went on to say that the incidents were not, as some have claimed, due to people stealing things that they simply cannot afford to buy out of poverty.
She also said that Democrats were looking for two different proposals to combat the spree of robberies. The speaker outlined proposed legislation that would require anyone selling products online to register in order to prove that they were legitimate sellers. A second proposal involved making online companies accountable for identifying and stopping stolen items being sold through their platforms.
“None of it is acceptable and it has to be stopped,” Pelosi concluded. “It’s outrageous and it must be stopped.”
Pelosi was also lambasted for defending the practice among members of Congress of trading individual stocks despite their access to privileged information that could affect markets and companies.
