Yet another country music star has expressed his disgust with Bud Light after the beer company sent controversial transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney a personalized case of Bud Light with his face on it to mark the one-year anniversary of his transition into “girlhood.”
While on stage for a concert in Piedmont, Alabama, last Saturday, Brantley Gilbert took a can of Bud Light and threw it to the ground while the crowd roared in approval. “Yeah, f*** that,” he said, as his bandmates continued to play a cover of Queen’s hit song, “Another One Bites the Dust.”
Moments later, someone in the audience or offstage threw Gilbert a different beer in a silver can. Though the brand name cannot be determined from the video, it must have been acceptable to Gilbert, who then tossed the beer to his drummer and encouraged him to drink it — quickly.
“You ain’t got a hair on your a** if you don’t shotgun that son of a b****,” Gilbert insisted. Shotgunning a beer involves stabbing a can of beer and drinking all of its contents in one long, protracted move. The drummer complied with Gilbert’s dare and tossed the empty can behind him when he finished. The crowd once again whooped in approval.
With that incident at his concert, Gilbert now joins fellow country artists Travis Tritt, Kid Rock, and John Rich in protesting Bud Light for its association with Mulvaney, and reports indicate that the popular boycott is affecting Bud Light’s bottom line. As of late last week, the value of Anheuser-Busch, which owns Bud Light, had already dropped $5 billion.
Gilbert first became a national sensation in 2011 with hits like “Country Must Be Country Wide” and “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do.” Three years later, he released “Bottoms Up,” which spent 25 weeks on the Billboard top 100 chart. Since then, he has continued to produce popular tunes, including “The Weekend” in 2017 and “What Happens in a Small Town,” a duet he released with Lindsay Ell in 2019.
Throughout his career, Gilbert has also been in recovery from alcoholism, and some of his songs, such as “Hard Days” and “Just as I Am,” publicize his private struggles with addiction. Gilbert’s long-standing sobriety explains why he gave the unidentified beer to his drummer to slam rather than drinking it himself.
