Madonna recovering in the hospital after contracting ‘a serious bacterial infection,’ her upcoming tour now on ‘pause’

News & Politics

Pop icon Madonna was recently rushed to the hospital, where she spent several days in the ICU, after contracting what has been described as “a serious bacterial infection.”

According to reports, Madonna was discovered unresponsive at an unidentified residence in or near New York City on Saturday. She was then rushed to an NYC hospital, where she was admitted into the ICU and intubated at least overnight.

On Wednesday, Madonna’s longtime manager, Guy Oseary, confirmed the news in an Instagram message. “On Saturday June 24, Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection which lead to a several day stay in the ICU,” Oseary posted. “Her health in improving, however she is still under medical care.

“A full recovery is expected,” he assured her fans.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Madonna was still recovering in “a regular ward” of the hospital, the New York Post reported. No further details about her diagnosis or treatment have been revealed.

This health scare has forced Madonna’s team to suspend her upcoming tour, Celebration. “At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour,” Oseary’s message added.

Many fans were likely looking forward to Celebration, a tour in which the 64-year-old singer promised to reprise many of her old hits — which include “Borderline,” “Material Girl,” “Vogue,” “Rain,” “Take a Bow,” and “Ray of Light.” However, the tour was not without controversy. In March, Madonna announced that she had added a stop in Nashville and would donate all proceeds from that show to so-called trans rights groups. The announcement came just as news broke that a shooter who identified as transgender had murdered three adults and three children at the Covenant School in Nashville.

The announcement about Madonna’s Nashville show made no mention of the shooting, indicating that the announcement had been scheduled in advance and likely had nothing to do with the horrific shooting at all. At the time, Madonna stated on Instagram that the decision to add the Nashville stop came in response to new Tennessee laws which restrict drag shows and ban treating a minor’s biological sex like a disease.

“[T]hese so-called laws to protect. our children are unfounded and pathetic,” she wrote in an Instagram message. “Anyone with half a brain knows not to f*** with a drag queen.” Madonna also invited Bob the Drag Queen, who recently won RuPaul’s “Drag Race” show, to join her at the Nashville performance.

That show was scheduled for December 22. Now, like her other scheduled stops, it may have to be postponed. Madonna was supposed to travel throughout the United States and Canada between mid-July and early October, when she then intended to head to Europe for more shows. Oseary promised to provide more details about tour updates, “including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows,” soon.
