Former Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake will announce a U.S. Senate bid in October, according to the Wall Street Journal. Lake informed the outlet that she will kick off her campaign at a rally on October 10.
“We need to get a senator in there who is going to fight back and put America first,” she said, according to the Journal.
Lake, who lost the Arizona 2022 gubernatorial contest to then-Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, has claimed that the election was stolen and that she actually won. She is a strong supporter of former President Donald Trump.
The Journal reported that Lake said she would like to meet with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) soon and that she would vote for him as leader if he is the top GOP pick.
She is slated to meet with Republicans while visiting the nation’s capital next week, the outlet reported. “I’d like to meet them to show them that I’m a very reasonable person who loves my state,” she noted. It is expected that Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina will “sherpa” Lake’s visit, according to the Journal.
Lake noted that she opposes abortion but thinks that the states hold the right to regulate the issue for themselves, according to the outlet, which also reported that she said she backs her state’s 15-week ban but would oppose a federal abortion ban.
Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who had been a Democrat but announced last year that she registered as an independent, has not announced whether she will seek re-election, according to the Journal. Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego announced a bid for the Senate seat earlier this year.
“I don’t believe that the Republicans in Arizona want to hand over our Senate vote to a New York liberal like Chuck Schumer,” Lake said, according to the Journal.
“Her extremism should disqualify her from public office—and it will. Again,” Hannah Goss, a spokesperson for Ruben Gallego, said of Lake in a statement, according to the outlet.
