Villain in action movie helped prompt Joe Biden’s latest executive order, chief of staff says

President Joe Biden was so alarmed by a villain in a “Mission Impossible” movie, he said that it further inspired him to issue an executive order against artificial intelligence, according to his chief of staff.

The bizarre revelation was reported by the Associated Press after Biden issued the order Monday establishing safety guidelines to ensure that artificial intelligence isn’t used by bad actors with ill intent.

Bruce Reed told the AP that the president had expressed concern about artificial intelligence but that his screening of a “Mission Impossible” movie with an AI villain made him even more determined to issue the order.

“If he hadn’t already been concerned about what could go wrong with AI before that movie, he saw plenty more to worry about,” said Reed.

In the action movie, an artificial intelligence entity gains sentience and sinks a Russian submarine before thwarting Tom Cruise’s character’s efforts to shut it down.

Reed went on to say that Biden was alarmed by other videos he saw that were generated using artificial intelligence.

“He saw fake AI images of himself, of his dog,” he added. “He saw how it can make bad poetry. And he’s seen and heard the incredible and terrifying technology of voice cloning, which can take three seconds of your voice and turn it into an entire fake conversation.”

The sweeping order includes a call for Congress to pass data privacy legislation to enshrine protections against artificial intelligence abuses in the law.

“The Departments of Energy and Homeland Security will also address AI systems’ threats to critical infrastructure, as well as chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and cybersecurity risks,” the administration said about the order.

Reed had previously called the order “the strongest set of actions any government in the world has ever taken on AI safety, security, and trust.”
