A man was caught on surveillance video sucker punching a grandfather who was pushing his grandchild in a stroller in a very expensive neighborhood in southern California.
The video was posted to social media and showed a man calmly walk up to the victim and punch him in the face, knocking him down. A moment later, the victim got back up and checked on the 10-month-old child in the stroller.
The attacker can be seen nonchalantly walking away and getting into a Honda Odyssey minivan before driving away.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department released the video in hopes of obtaining help from the public to identify the suspect.
On Wednesday, the LASD said that officers had arrested a suspect identified as 29-year-old Angel Sanchez Jr. from Oxnard. He was arrested and charged with assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury.
Police believe Sanchez might have been involved in another assault on a juvenile in the same area around the same time.
Officials said the incident is under investigation as a possible hate crime because the two victims are of Asian descent.
Residents in the neighborhood were angry about the incident and told KTLA it had always been a safe place.
“It feels really random,” said Greg Higa. “This is a safe neighborhood and we’re all just absolutely horrified that something could happen here to someone doing something so innocent like walking their child.”
“The man who was attacked is a very nice community member,” said Mary Steele, who is also a neighbor. “He has a beautiful home, people know who he is and the baby is an innocent victim.”
The median single family home price in Calabasas is about $1.175 million, according to a Redfin estimate. Among the many celebrities known to live or have lived in Calabasas are Sylvester Stallone, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, and John Travolta.
