McCarthy spouts identity politics, says he’ll support Trump, and says he’s open to serving in a cabinet post

News & Politics

GOP Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California has said that when he was attending a State of the Union address, the Democrats looked “like America,” while the Republicans looked “like the most restrictive country club in America.” He went on to tout the election of Republican women and minorities that has taken place since that point.

He has made the comments on at least two occasions, including while speaking to the Oxford Union and during remarks at the DealBook Summit.

Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison responded to McCarthy’s remarks by tweeting, “Even a broken, good for nothing clock is right twice a day.”

McCarthy, who recently announced that he plans to depart from his congressional seat at the end of the year, has said that he will support former President Donald Trump’s re-election bid, and that he would be willing to serve in a Trump cabinet post. The lawmaker was ousted from the House speakership earlier this year.

When asked by CBS News’ Robert Costa whether Trump will be the nominee, McCarthy answered, “Yes.” McCarthy also responded in the affirmative when asked if Trump can count on his support. Asked whether he would be willing to take on a Trump cabinet post, McCarthy replied, “In the right position,” saying that he would do it if he is the best individual for the role.

Former President Donald Trump has been crushing the rest of the GOP presidential primary field in polls and appears to be on track to easily clinch the party’s 2024 nomination. Earlier this week, four other White House hopefuls gathered in Alabama for the fourth GOP presidential primary debate, but Trump skipped it, just as he had previously skipped the prior debates.
