A woman in Michigan was arrested after video caught her angrily attacking and injuring a female clerk at a Kroger grocery store after her EBT card didn’t have enough funds for her grocery cart.

Surveillance video showed the 21-year-old customer get into an argument with an employee at the self-checkout line at a Kroger grocery store in St. Clair Shores on Tuesday.

Shelby Parham was allegedly upset after her EBT “Bridge Card”‘ did not have enough money, and the 49-year-old worker refused to help her and instead walked away.

Although another employee came over to assist her, Parham can be seen walking toward the employee and strike her in the face, causing her to fall backward.

“The employee walked away from her,” said St. Clair Shores Police Detective Gordon Carrier. “The defendant was upset and followed her and struck her in the face.”

Carrier said that the victim lost consciousness momentarily and was transported to a hospital for treatment for a head injury.

Parham is accused of assaulting the woman in front of her 1-year-old daughter, who can be seen in the video sitting in the shopping cart.

Police arrived within minutes and arrested Parham. She was given one misdemeanor charge with an enhancement of aggravated assault. She was released on a $1,000 bond.

“It’s obviously very clear-cut. There’s no questions as to who’s at fault here,” said Carrier.

The victim had a black eye and is experiencing headaches from the attack. She took time off from work to recover at home.

If convicted, Parham could face up to a year in prison.

Carrier used the incident to warn the public about making hasty decisions during the busy holiday season that they might regret later.

“Everybody can be stressed out, right?” he said. “There’s got to be better resolutions than violence.”
