Biden campaign brings reporters to campaign HQ for off-the-record scoldings — but the New York Times doesn’t take it: Report

Members of President Joe Biden’s campaign are trying to coordinate media coverage, according to a new report, amplifying their preferred narratives while scolding reporters for “what they’re getting wrong.”

The Biden re-election campaign is organizing “off-the-record trips for top political reporters and editors” to the campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, Semafor reported. Those journalists are meeting with top officials in the campaign, including advisers, strategists, and even Biden’s campaign manager.

The purpose of the meetings? To review media coverage and correct what the campaign believes “they’re getting wrong.”

Two people with knowledge of the situation told Semafor that during meetings with reporters from outlets like The New York Times, the Washington Post, and others, campaign officials have invoked a coverage spreadsheet laying out areas where the team believes their reporting has fallen short.

In particular, campaign officials have chafed at some of the coverage of former President Donald Trump, feeling that outlets are too focused on his legal troubles and haven’t paid enough attention to some of his incendiary recent statements on the campaign trail.

In addition to meeting with journalists from the New York Times and Washington Post, the campaign plans to meet with reporters from Reuters, Bloomberg, NPR, Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, NBC News, ABC News, and others in the coming days.

So far, the meetings have been “substantive” and “productive,” according to Semafor, suggesting the legacy media is accepting cues from the Biden campaign.

There was one interesting “exception,” however: the New York Times. But it’s not clear what issues either side raised with the other.

For months, the Biden campaign has been quietly trying to shape the media narrative about the 2024 election. Not only are the White House and Biden himself frustrated with the media’s coverage of the economy, for example, but the Biden campaign is especially concerned about the airtime that polls are receiving because they show Biden losing to Donald Trump.

Biden and his campaign believe the media should dedicate more time to his narrative that Trump represents an existential threat to democracy. That narrative, of course, serves only to scare voters into supporting Biden’s re-election.
