High school student punches teacher while hallucinating on drugs, causing serious brain injury

News & Politics

A high school student in Ohio punched a teacher in the head while hallucinating on drugs, leaving the teacher with a serious brain jury that ultimately required the removal of her skullcap.

The 15-year-old student at Colerain High School reportedly began acting distressed after he “ingested an unknown drug” during class on Thursday, according to WLWT. The 60-year-old teacher who was punched suffered serious injury, requiring “extensive medical treatment.”

The teen in question has also been accused of attacking another student by grabbing him and pinching him on the neck.

Following the horrific incident, the teacher was quickly taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where she eventually had her skullcap removed to prevent further damage due to brain swelling.

Her current condition has not yet been made available.

The New York Post reported that the authorities arrived at the school and found the student in the school’s career center lobby, apparently hallucinating. The student also had a self-inflicted head injury, but the cause of the injury was not disclosed.

The student was first taken to the hospital to be treated before being moved to the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of felonious assault. Lyndsey Creecy — a spokesperson for the Northwest Local Schools District — said that the school was looking into the matter.

There was apparently a letter sent to the parents of the school, which asked that they keep “both our staff member and our student in your prayers.” The school insisted that the attack was an isolated event. There is currently no evidence that the attack was premeditated.

“There is no current threat to the school community regarding the matter,” the school said in a release, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. “The district remains resolute in their commitment to providing a safe and nurturing environment for all students and staff.”

Counselors at the school apparently made themselves available to students and staff who may have been emotionally impacted by the incident.

The Northwest Local School District serves almost 9,000 students in suburban Hamilton County. The school district covers a 56-square-mile area and serves Colerain, Green, Ross, and Springfield Townships, according to U.S. Department of Education data.

The incident continues to remain under investigation, and the student is expected to face disciplinary action for his behavior.
