Human head and hands found in freezer of Colorado home during cleanup by new owners, police say

The new owners of a home in Colorado were shocked to discover a severed human head and hands in a freezer while they were cleaning up the property, police said.

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office said that they were called to the home Pinyon Avenue in Grand Junction on Friday after the new owners reported that human remains were found.

Sam Troester, a woman who lives across the street from the home, told KUSA-TV that she began videotaping the incident after she noticed that officials were investigating in hazmat suits.

Troester says that the previous owner was a man who was taking care of his elderly mother.

“The white hazmat looking suits, that’s what caught my eye at first,” she explained. “That’s what was most surprising.”

She went on to say that the previous owners had left early that morning and the new owners arrived later that day.

“It turns out that the new owners of the house posted online that they were looking to sell a bunch of the garbage that was left behind, scrap metal and things that people could repurpose, and there was a deep freezer that was posted up for grabs,” she continued.

She said people came over from the house to ask to use her restroom, and they told her that a head had fallen out of a black plastic bag in the freezer. It was reportedly covered up by packages of frozen meat.

Officials said that no other body parts were found at the home.

“I feel so bad,” Troester added. “I would hate to have to be the family missing that loved one right now. It would be heartbreaking.”

The sheriff’s office said it would take time to identify the person whose remains were found.

“These types of tests take a significant amount of time, and again, we ask for patience from the public as this investigation continues,” police said in a press release.

They added that the incident was being investigated as a homicide.
