In an 18-15 party-line vote, the House Homeland Security Committee advanced articles of impeachment that target Homeland Security Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas.
While Republicans voted in favor advancing the articles, Democrats voted against it, according to the Associated Press.
“The facts are indisputable—for three years, Secretary Mayorkas has willfully and systemically refused to comply with the laws enacted by Congress, and he has breached the public trust. His actions created this unprecedented crisis, turning every state into a border state,” committee chair Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn.) said, according to a press release.
“As a result, thousands of Americans have lost their lives and our nation is experiencing a historic national security, public safety, and humanitarian catastrophe. Make no mistake, Secretary Mayorkas’ lawlessness is exactly what the Framers of our Constitution designed impeachment to remedy. The historical record makes it clear—Congress holds impeachment power to hold accountable public officials who refuse to do their duty, and to deal with grave harms to our political order,” Green said, according to the press release.
The impeachment push is likely doomed to fail. Even if House Republicans were to vote in favor of impeaching Mayorkas, the subsequent Senate vote would almost certainly fall short of the threshold necessary to convict.
Border security is critical for public safety. For example, a recent post from U.S. Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens highlighted the arrest of child sex offenders.
“Over the weekend, USBP agents in Casa Grande, AZ, El Paso & Del Rio, TX arrested child sex offenders w/ felony convictions & prison sentences ranging from 36 months to 20 years,” Owens noted. “They re-entered illegally after being deported. Agents caught them and kept them out of your community.”
