Florida police said they arrested a suspect accused of stabbing a man with a box cutter after being offered a ride from a Walmart parking lot in Miami-Dade county.
Investigators said that Nelson Angel Bellon approached a 56-year-old man on Saturday night and asked for a ride. The man agreed, and Bellon told him where he wanted to go.
While on the way, Bellon allegedly told the man to get out of the vehicle and then pulled out a box cutter and stabbed the victim in his torso numerous times.
Witnesses said they heard screaming and saw the men struggling after the car came to a halt at the intersection of Southwest 93 Avenue and Fourth Lane, according to WPLG-TV. They said the victim collapsed after getting out of the car.
Some bystanders went to help the victim while the attacker drove away in the stolen car.
Cellphone video obtained by WPLG showed the aftermath of the attack as first responders from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrive to treat the victim. One video also reportedly captured the attacker as he calmly drove away.
The victim was in critical but stable condition after being transported to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital.
Police said that the car was recovered on Sunday at about 2 a.m. on the 600 block of Southwest Eighth Street. Bellon was taken into custody a short time later, and police said that he confessed while being questioned at the MDPD Northside Station. He was charged with attempted murder and armed carjacking.
Bellon is being held at the Miami-Dade County Pre-Trial Detention Center as of Tuesday.
Police made it clear that the victim was not a ride-share driver.
