An armed robbery of a Taco Bell in Ohio was thwarted by an armed employee who fired back at the suspect and sent him to a hospital, according to police.
Akron police said they were called to respond to a shooting at a Taco Bell at the 1400 block of South Arlington Street on Monday at about 7:35 p.m.
Investigators said that the 35-year-old suspect fired at a 21-year-old employee during the robbery and the employee fired back, striking the suspect.
“The suspect fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money,” said Akron police.
The suspect allegedly was dropped off at Summa Health Akron City Hospital moments later with a gunshot wound in his upper body. Police said he was in serious but stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.
Police said the suspect is facing robbery and other charges, but they had not released his identity. They also apprehended a 33-year-old man named Rayshoun Bruce, who was charged with robbery for allegedly dropping off the injured suspect at the hospital. He was booked into Summit County Jail.
Police said that they were able to recover the vehicle used in the incident as well as other evidence. The Taco Bell employee was not injured.
“The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are working to determine the connection, if any, to the other area robberies,” said police.
WOIO-TV reported that the fast-food restaurant had a door and window boarded up but that the drive-thru was still open.
A similar incident weeks prior at a drive-thru in Akron had a different and tragic ending. A man allegedly shot a drive-thru employee after he got upset that they didn’t want to accept his money because it was in poor condition. That employee died, and a suspect was arrested a week later.
