In a complete reversal of what Democrats had hoped for, Americans have rejected the pricey infrastructure bill with massive social programs built into it. A new poll shows that more Americans rebuff the Democrats’ $1.75 trillion spending proposal than welcome it.
According to a new ABC News/Ipsos poll released on Sunday, public support for President Joe Biden’s bills to increase spending on infrastructure and social programs has faded.
The survey found that 32% of Americans think that the spending bills would hurt people like them if they became law, while 25% said they believe the bills would help them. Almost two-thirds (64%) of Republicans think the bills would hurt people like them, and 29% of independents feel the same. Despite being the major framework of Biden’s presidency, fewer than half of Democrats (47%) believe the two bills would help them.
A CBS News poll from earlier this month found that 36% of respondents said it would help them and their family versus 33% who said it would hurt their loved ones. The survey also said that 79% of survey participants said that inflation was caused by supply and manufacturing issues after the pandemic and 66% said it was caused by U.S. government policy. “And when asked about potential causes of inflation right now, two-thirds cited U.S. government policy,” the outlet reported.
The survey found that only 37% of Americans believed that Biden and the Democrats were focused on issues they care a lot about.
This woeful poll for Biden and the Democrats arrives on the same days as an NBC News survey that shows the president at all-time lows. The NBC News polls found that Biden was underwater for the first time of his presidency – 42% approval rating versus 54% who disapprove.
The poll also found that 71% said the country is “off on the wrong track” – including 48% of Democrats.
“When you see a wrong track of 71%, it is a flashing red light,” Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies said. “These folks are telling us that this is not going well.”
That’s a significant increase from another poll in September that said 61% of Americans felt as though the nation has “pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track.”
