Pixar restores same-sex kiss in upcoming ‘Lightyear’ movie over staff outrage about Florida’s parental rights bill

News & Politics

Pixar Animation Studios reportedly restored a same-sex kiss in its highly anticipated upcoming film “Lightyear” after receiving a letter of outrage from some staff members over the parental rights bill in Florida.

The development was first reported by Variety.

The report cites a source close to the production of the film that says a character in the movie voiced by Uzo Aduba is identified as a gay person and in a relationship with another woman. But while a kiss between she and her girlfriend was excised from the movie, it has been replaced.

The action was in response to a letter from LGTBQ employees at Pixar and their supporters accusing executives at Disney of censoring “overtly gay affection” in feature movies. Disney is the parent company of Pixar and has been at the center of the controversy related to their response to the Florida bill.

“Nearly every moment of overtly gay affection is cut at Disney’s behest, regardless of when there is protest from both the creative teams and executive leadership at Pixar,” read the statement from the employees. “Even if creating LGBTQIA+ content was the answer to fixing the discriminatory legislation in the world, we are being barred from creating it.”

Variety says none of its sources could identify any scene that had been censored in the manner described in the accusation.

Supporters of the Florida bill have accused the media of siding with opponents by using their derisive term for the legislation: The “Don’t Say Gay” bill. This has led to bizarre assumptions by many who oppose the bill but don’t actually know what provisions are actually in the law.

A Morning Consult poll found that a majority of Americans supported the main proposal in the bill limiting gender and sex teaching in kindergarten until third grade, and another limiting such teaching for grades above third grade.

The Lightyear movie stars Chris Evans and will be released on June 17.
