JUST IN: 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Taiwan

A preliminary 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast near Taiwan Wednesday morning (local time).

There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries, Reuters reported.

According to KITV4, there is currently no tsunami threat to Hawaii:

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii following a 6.9 magnitude earthquake just off the western coast of Taiwan, Tuesday morning.

The quake was recorded at approximately 7:41 a.m. HST about 44 miles south of Hualien City, Taiwan at a depth of just over six miles.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Pacific Tsunami Warning Center gave the all-clear on the tsunami threat at around 7:52 a.m.

“Based on earthquake information and historic tsunami records, the earthquake is not expected to generate a tsunami,” NWS officials wrote.
