More Collusion Between Biden and Big Tech? Censoring So-Called ‘Extremism’

News & Politics

Shortly after Biden said MAGA Republicans represent a threatening “extremism,” the Biden White House heralded that leftist Big Tech companies, in “coordination” with the administration, will be rolling out new tools and policies to combat so-called violent “extremism” online. In other words, more censorship.

YouTube, Microsoft, Twitch, and Meta (which owns Facebook and Instagram) announced “new initiatives to limit the spread of hateful rhetoric in coordination with a White House gathering on hate-fueled violence,” The Washington Post reported on Thursday. The Post claimed that “hateful rhetoric” online is under new scrutiny after recent mass shooters were discovered to have a history of violent online posts.

Biden’s Department of Homeland Security has already linked “violent extremist ideologies” as a convergent factor contributing to a heightened threat in the U.S.

The White House issued a press release about the United We Stand Summit saying, “Technology companies, including YouTube, Twitch, Microsoft, and Meta are announcing new actions their platforms are taking to prevent hate-fueled violence.”

YouTube will now reportedly remove videos “glorifying acts for the purpose of inspiring others or fundraising,” even if the group in question has no terrorist ties. YouTube will also launch a campaign identifying “manipulated information,” according to The Post.

Amazon-owned Twitch is rolling out new anti-harassment tools, and Microsoft will provide “online safety education” within its popular Minecraft game, The Post reported. Meta is reportedly partnering with the Institute of International Studies’ Center on Terrorism, Extremism and Counterterrorism to identify “new trends in extremism” on its platforms.

The Post specifically mentioned social media’s connection to the events of Jan. 6, 2021, as a pretext for Big Tech’s coordinated effort with the Biden administration against so-called “extremism.”

This type of censorship coordination is hardly new. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said that his entire agency would target the “emerging threat” of “anti-government sentiment” during MSNBC’s The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart on Sept. 11. Mayorkas’ chilling statements come after President Joe Biden declared during his notorious Sept. 1 “Blood Red” speech that “MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic.”

The Biden DHS has described “terrorism threat[s]” as “false or misleading narratives and conspiracy theories, and other forms of mis- dis- and mal-information.” The implication here is that simply disagreeing with the Biden administration could result in an individual being targeted as a potential threat. The DHS clarified under “Additional Details” that the terrorist threats are “motivated” by, among other things, “domestic grievances” that are “cultivated through the consumption of certain online content.”

The Biden administration has a history of pressuring Big Tech to censor content questioning or contradicting approved government narratives. There have also been allegations that the Biden administration colluded with Big Tech to silence free speech.

Conservatives are under attack.
