It looks like a gunman may have picked the wrong restaurant to shoot up over the weekend, as witnesses told police that another armed man who was inside the Phoenix eatery shot the gunman and halted the threat.
What are the details?
Detectives said 26-year-old Oscar Luna entered a restaurant Saturday night and began firing a number of rounds from a gun in his possession, the Arizona Republic reported.
The restaurant in question appears to be Tacos El Rancho, which is in the area of Camelback Road and 27th Avenue, KTAR-FM reported.
Police said another man inside the restaurant during the incident shot Luna, KPNX-TV reported.
Officers arrived on the scene around 10 p.m. and found Luna suffering from a gunshot wound, the Republic said.
Sgt. Brian Bower added to the paper that a man whom police detained and questioned “was inside the restaurant during this incident and had shot the individual ending this confrontation.”
Bower noted to the Republic that the Phoenix Fire Department took Luna to a local hospital “where he did not survive his injuries.”
In the meantime, the man police detained said he exercised self-defense, and other witnesses supported the man’s statement, police told the paper.
Police added to the Republic that no arrests have been made, and the incident remains under investigation.
Once the active investigation is completed, KPNX said the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office will review the case to determine if any criminal charges are warranted.
Those with any information are asked to contact Phoenix police at 602-262-6151 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS, KPNX reported.
How are folks reacting?
Those commenting on social media about the incident seemed decidedly in the corner of the man who ended the threat:
“Imagine eating at a restaurant and a criminal enters the building carrying a gun and starts shooting,” one Facebook poster noted before adding that “this clearly sounds like self-defense and defense of others …”
A Twitter user called it a “great response to a bad situation.”
