House Democrat announces death of his 28-year-old daughter

News & Politics

Democratic Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García of Illinois has announced that his 28-year-old daughter Rosa died.

The congressman released a statement about the sad news on Tuesday, though he did not provide details regarding the woman’s cause of death.

“Last night our beloved daughter, Rosa, passed away at the age of 28. Our family is completely heartbroken. Rosa joined our family as a young girl who had been in the foster care system. We did our best to provide a stable, loving, and welcoming home for her. Our family asks for privacy and welcomes your thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time,” García said in the statement.

Condolences poured in from other lawmakers.

“My hearts breaks for @repchuygarcia and his family. The loss of a loved one, especially of a child, is an incomparable pain. Sending prayers and strength to heal,” Democratic Rep. Barbara Lee tweeted.

“This is devastating. Angela and I are holding @RepChuyGarcia and his family in our prayers during this difficult time,” Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla of California tweeted.

“My heart breaks for @RepChuyGarcia and the entire García family. The loss of a child is an unimaginable pain that, sadly, I know all too well. My prayers and deepest sympathies are with you,” Democratic Rep. Joe Morelle of New York tweeted.

“My deepest condolences to @RepChuyGarcia. The loss of a child is an unimaginable pain and I will keep his entire family in my thoughts and prayers as they go through this difficult time,” Democratic Rep. Nydia Velázquez of New York tweeted.

García has served in the House since 2019. He unsuccessfully ran for Chicago mayor this year, failing to advance to the April 4 runoff. García previously lost the 2015 Chicago mayoral runoff contest to incumbent Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
