Man allegedly enters home in middle of night, physically attacks homeowner. But victim has a gun — and gains upper hand after firing one shot.

News & Politics

A man allegedly entered an upstate New York home early Monday morning and physically attacked the suddenly awakened homeowner.

However, the victim had a gun, fired one shot, and hit the alleged intruder. After that, police arrested the suspect at the scene.

What are the details?

Police in Greece, New York, responded to the 300 block of Brayton Road around 4:30 a.m. for a reported burglary in progress, WROC-TV reported.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers identified 25-year-old Rochester resident Christopher McManus; he was inside the home with a gunshot wound to his lower body, the station said.

Police said McManus was taken to the University of Rochester Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries, WROC said.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the homeowner was awakened after hearing noises indicating a break-in had occurred, the station said.

With that, the homeowner grabbed his “legally owned firearm,” which is when McManus attacked him, WROC said.

Police said the homeowner fired a single shot during the attack, striking McManus, according to the station.

What happened next?

Detectives charged McManus with first-degree burglary, second-degree assault, second-degree criminal mischief, and petit larceny, WROC noted, adding that McManus was being held pending arraignment. WHAM-TV said he was incarcerated in the Monroe County Jail.

Police told the station the homeowner’s actions reflected self-defense, not only of him but also of his residence. However, police noted to WROC, the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office will review the case.
