Not backing down: Musk issues mock apology after Soros-Magneto comparison

News & Politics

Elon Musk is not backing down after declaring that George Soros reminds him of Magneto, a comic book character.

Marvel says of the character, “Professor Charles Xavier and the X-Men both claim the role of Magneto’s principal and longest standing foes; however, they do often find themselves on the same team.”

“Soros reminds me of Magneto,” Musk tweeted on Monday — he also claimed that Soros “wants to erode the very fabric of civilization” and that he “hates humanity.”

On Wednesday, Musk issued a mock apology.

“I’d like [to] apologize for this post,” Musk wrote, referring to his tweet comparing Soros to Magneto. “It was really unfair to Magneto,” he added.

Musk made the quip not long after replying to a Babylon Bee tweet that joked, “Elon Musk Apologizes To Magneto For Comparing Him To George Soros” — Musk posted a laughing emoji in response to the satire site’s tweet.

When CNBC’s David Faber brought up Musk’s Soros comments during an interview on Tuesday, the billionaire business tycoon rejected the notion that he is anti-Semitic, and suggested that if anything, he is a “pro-Semite.” During the interview, Musk noted that he does not care about potential negative business consequences for airing his views on Twitter — he explained that he will say what he wants, and if the result is a loss of money, “so be it.”

While Musk accused Soros of hating mankind, he has tweeted that he himself loves humanity.

“Among other things, Soros astutely identified a massive arbitrage opportunity in district attorney elections, where a relatively small amount of money has outsized influence. Soros’s instructions to his pet prosecutors were (essentially) to minimize prosecuting even violent criminals,” Musk has declared in a tweet.
