Based on witness information, police found a suspect a short distance from the scene and took him into custody, authorities said, adding that a gun was recovered.

Medics transported a 34-year-old pregnant female with life-threatening injuries and a 37-year-old male with non-life-threatening injuries to Harborview Medical Center, police said.

Just before 5 p.m., police announced that the pregnant woman had died at the hospital along with her unborn baby.

Homicide detectives are investigating the case, KING-TV reported, adding that police are still gathering details about what happened.

‘Devastating’

“That’s devastating, that’s gotta be a nightmare,” a woman told the station in regard to the shooting. “I felt terrible for the victims and their loved ones. I know this stuff happens every day in all parts of the city, and it’s just a scary thing.”

A spokesperson for the Downtown Seattle Association told KING it was a “tragic and senseless act. We’re grateful that Seattle Police were able to quickly apprehend a suspect and further violence was avoided. People deserve to feel safe in the heart of our city – we can’t accept the alternative.”

Mayor Bruce Harrell addressed the shooting during a news conference about a different matter, the station reported: “I do want to recognize that within the last several hours, we suffered a tragedy downtown, on the streets of downtown Seattle. We don’t know what motivated it. We do have the suspect. We do believe at this point, I think life was lost, and it’s very sad.”
