No bodies found at alleged site of unmarked graves after native tribe has Catholic church basement dug up

An excavation of a Catholic church’s basement revealed no human remains after a local native tribe suggested that a “dark and sinister” unmarked grave site could have been present under the former residential school.

Chief Derek Nepinak of the Minegoziibe Anishinabe tribe posted a video in which he announced the conclusion of an investigation in Manitoba, Canada, after ground-penetrating radar allegedly spotted anomalies under the Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Catholic Church.

“We understand that over time burial sites may be lost to the natural elements, but to bury remains under a building suggests a dark and sinister intent that cannot be unaddressed as we expose the truth of what happened in our homeland,” Nepinak said in a July 2023, according to CTV News.

However, after a month-long investigation using the same excavation team used by local police forces, Nepinak said that the search found “no conclusive evidence of human remains” at the site.

However, the chief reinforced that the results of the investigation should “take nothing away from the difficult truths experienced by our families who attended the residential school.”

“We know from our observations of the public at large that our work will feed into a denialist narrative of what happened to our families at residential school,” he added.

Due to near-constant claims of unmarked graves across Canada, the chief added that “the results of [the] excavation under the church should not be deemed as conclusive [for] other ongoing searches and efforts.

A reported 14 anomalies were originally reported in the basement as “possible burial sites,” with an additional 57 around the area of the church.

In one of the most widely reported stories of 2021, a massive unmarked grave site was allegedly found in British Columbia, Canada. Reports of child graves resulted in public outcry and dozens of Catholic churches being either vandalized or burned. To date, no bodies were found at these locations.

“It’s crucial to note that, as of now, no human remains linked to the residential schools have been discovered in Canada,” said reporter Matt Brevner.

“Tragically, these events also saw acts of arson that led to the burning or vandalization of at least 83 churches across the nation,” he added.
