‘Nebraska girls deserve better than you’: Riley Gaines accuses pro-transgender state Sen. Megan Hunt of ‘misogyny’

News & Politics

Former University of Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines, who has been outspoken in decrying the practice of allowing men to compete in women’s sports, took leftist Nebraska state Sen. Megan Hunt to task on social media.

“It can be hard, when we’re young, to not win a trophy sometimes. But we grow up and realize it’s not the end of the world and we don’t need to turn that loss into our entire personality,” Hunt wrote, taking a jab at Gaines in a post on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter.

Hunt made the comments when responding to a Lincoln Journal Star post that read, “Riley Gaines, a former All-American swimmer, spoke to more than 1,000 people in Nebraska Sunday about keeping transgender women out of women’s sports.”

Gaines is a vocal defender of women’s rights which are being eroded by those who advocate to allow men who identify as women to utilize women’s spaces and play in women’s sports. In the 200m freestyle final of the NCAA women’s championships in 2022, Gaines tied for fifth place with Lia Thomas, a man who identifies as a woman and competed in women’s swimming.

“Imagine missing the point this much lol,” Gaines wrote in response to Hunt’s comments. “It’s not about the trophy & never has been. That trophy is meaningless & devalued entirely. It’s about the message it sends to us. & it’s the same message you’re sending…that we don’t matter. Nebraska girls deserve better than you.”

“And by the way, I didn’t lose to the 6’4″ male cosplaying as a woman,” she noted. “We tied,” she pointed out, adding that “the ‘sore loser’ argument doesn’t work here but good try. Back to the drawing board of how you can make excuses to continue denying females worth and value.”

“Love all the quote tweets and replies calling this exactly what it is: misogyny. I hope your constituents see this. Get ratio’d,” Gaines also wrote to Hunt.

Hunt, who included the self-description “Bi queen” on her X profile, has said that her “son is trans.”
