A band director in Alabama was apparently arrested and tased by police after he ignored their demand to stop his students’ musical performance at the end of a football game.
The New York Post reported that Johnny Mims, band director at Minor High School, told the student musicians to keep playing even though the police requested that he get them to stop.
The band was performing at a football game between Minor High School and Jackson-Olin High School at the PD Jackson-Olin High School stadium on Thursday night. The police had ordered the band directors to bring the music to stop so they could safely clear out the stadium, but Mims reportedly did not heed the request.
A police report posted to X stated that Mims refused to stop the music, instead encouraging the students to continue playing. When the police reportedly told Mims to put his hands behind his back, he pushed an officer. He was subsequently tased by the officer, which “ended the physical confrontation,” according to the statement.
Mims was taken to the hospital after he was tased, and then sent to Birmingham City Jail. He was bonded out shortly after, according to the New York Post.
There were arrest warrants issued for disorderly conduct, harassment, and resisting arrest.
The Daily Beast reported that school Superintendent Walter Gonsoulin Jr. said “I urge everyone not to jump to conclusions,” adding that “I am in the process of gathering all the facts, and feel it would be inappropriate to comment further until that process is complete.”
Mims had taken over as band director for the school in 2018 after serving as director of orchestra and bands at Mainland High School in Daytona Beach. He also served as director of bands at New Smyrna Beach High School in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
It is currently unclear why Mims did not follow the officer’s orders to bring his students’ music to a stop. The investigation into the details of what led up to the altercation is still ongoing.
Tasers are issued by about 90% of law enforcement throughout the U.S., and the purpose is to stop someone by causing their muscles to flex and seize. One of the most common tasers is the X26 model, which lets out a shock of about 1.9 milliamperes, according to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
Minor High School ultimately won the football game against Jackson-Olin 27-0.
