We live in a day and age when truth has become malleable. Instead of being rooted in fact or divinity, as it’s been for all of human history, truth has devolved into something determined by feelings and agendas. At least that’s what’s happening in Western culture.
Elon Musk recently addressed this issue while visiting the Tesla factory in Austin, Texas. In a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Musk explained the current dilemma surrounding truth.
But Musk, in all his idiosyncrasies, illustrated it in a way only his colorful brain could construct.
“There’s an old saying, like ‘history is written by the victors,’ and it’s like, well, yes, but not if your enemies are still alive and have a lot of time on their hands to edit Wikipedia,” Musk said.
“History is written by the people who can harness the most editors,” Netanyahu concurs.
“[Musk] is right,” says Dave Rubin. “Why do the good guys always seem to win? It’s because they’re the survivors and then can write the history.”
And while this type of historical documentation is certainly tainted with a degree of bias, it’s still far closer to the truth than what we’re dealing with today.
“How this changes then is what’s happening in our modern world,” says Dave, “with deepfakes, with AI, with Wikipedia constantly being edited.”
“You get editors, you get activists, you get all of these things, and one day, we will never know what’s true, so we have a truth war on two fronts,” he explains.
“We have the truth and then two fronts coming after it – we have the people who will lie constantly for political reasons, to obtain power … and then we also have the machines and the algorithms who will feed those lies.”
“It’s that versus the truth,” says Dave.
