Dead man found in shopping cart with trail of blood leading to abandoned home, Philadelphia police say

News & Politics

Philadelphia police said they are investigating the death of a man whose body was found Wednesday in a shopping cart with a trail of blood leading to an abandoned home.

Investigators said that a bystander noticed the body in the shopping cart near the intersection of H Street and Westmoreland Street in the Kensington section of the city and called police at about 11:30 p.m.

Police found the body of the man covered in debris and wrapped in a blanket. They said there were traumatic injuries to his face and he was barefoot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

There was no identification found on the man, but police believe him to be in his thirties.

Police also said they brought in several people who were found at the abandoned home for interviews but later released them. They are reviewing footage from surveillance cameras in the area to look for evidence.

A medical examiner will determine the man’s cause of death, but police have ruled it a homicide.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small commented on the suspicious nature of the man’s death.

“For a body to be in a shopping cart, that’s very, very unusual,” said Small.

Police also said they have not ruled out the possibility that the man died of an overdose but are waiting for the results from a toxicology report.

One resident in the neighborhood who didn’t want to be identified told WPVI-TV that the shocking homicide was not a surprise.

“It’s not getting out of hand; it’s already out of hand,” she said. “Not surprised if something last night because it won’t be the first time, that’s for sure.”

Police data says that 397 have been killed in Philadelphia so far this year.
