Comedian Jay Leno says he doesn’t get into politics during performances

Comedian Jay Leno says he does not delve into politics during his performances.

“We live in an era now — I don’t even do politics anymore in my act,” the celebrity said, according to The Hill. “An audience is like an orchestra. You’re up there and you’re getting the laughs,” he noted. “Then you get into the political stuff.”

“It turns mean. They want to hear what the joke is — whether it’s about my guy or against my guy,” he explained, according to the outlet. “They’re not thinking of the joke. They’re thinking of the implications of the joke,” he noted. “So to me, I just don’t do it anymore. I just find it so annoying,” he said. “I find [the] audience likes it better. Hopefully they come to a comedy show to get away from politics,” he noted.

“I think we get enough of everybody’s opinions. It’s nice to hear a singer just sing, or a comedian just be funny,” he said, according to The Hill. “Obviously if you’re going to go see Stephen Colbert, a political comedian, that’s what you want,” he said. “But a lot of times, you just want to hear comedy,” he noted, “and that’s what I like.”

The comedian has previously noted that he dropped politics from his comedy.

“I’ve just taken politics out of the act, altogether. I just don’t discuss anymore. It’s like before the punch line, they’re deciding, ‘Is he pro-my guy, or against my guy?'” he said last year, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Leno, a car aficionado and collector, suffered burns in 2022. He broke numerous bones in an incident in early 2023 when he was knocked off of a motorcycle.
