Son of Democratic state senator arrested over hit-and-run that injured 14-year-old girl walking to church

The son of a Pennsylvania state senator was arrested and charged over a hit-and-run incident during which a 14-year-old girl was injured on her way to church.

The incident from Aug. 13 was captured on video, but Sharif Street Jr. was charged months later on Jan. 29.

Court records said that the surveillance video showed a white Nissan Altima hit the girl at about 8:40 a.m. and then stop for nearly a minute before taking off from North Broad near Erie Avenue.

The girl suffered a concussion and bruises but survived.

Police said that a bystander was able to capture the license plate of the car with their cellphone camera. After they determined the car belonged to Street Jr., they used cell phone data to show that he was in the area of the accident.

He reportedly told police that he had been visiting family in Atlantic City and had rented the vehicle to a male, but he did not provide details about who that person was.

Street Jr. was charged with numerous counts, including aggravated assault by vehicle and accidents involving death or injury. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on March 8.

Prior arrests

He was previously charged with disorderly conduct after engaging in a fight when he was refused entry into the inaugeration ceremony for Mayor Cherelle Parker. He was released without bail after turning himself in to police.

He also has other arrests for a fight in September and for disorderly conduct over another fight in February. Court documents said he was sentenced to 30 days probation and eight days in prison.

Street Jr. is also the grandson of former Philadelphia Mayor John Street.
