Police find homeless man stabbed to death after following trail of blood leading to abandoned building in California

Residents of a neighborhood in Long Beach, California, are shocked after police said they followed a trail of blood into an abandoned building and found a homeless man stabbed to death.

Long Beach police said they responded to a call for help from firefighters who were attending to a man who needed medical attention on Thursday morning on Long Beach Boulevard near East Anaheim Street.

Police said they followed a trail of blood into an abandoned building, where they found the dead body of a 35-year-old man with multiple stab wounds to his upper body.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by Long Beach Fire Department paramedics.

An initial investigation indicated that the homeless man might have gotten into an altercation with another man who fled from the scene.

People from the neighborhood told KABC that the man was homeless. Some said that homelessness had become a serious problem.

“They come, scream and they scare you, and you don’t know how to react or how they’re going to react when they get angry,” said Alma Iniguez, who works at a cellular wireless tent near the scene of the crime. “This is a very conflict area. I heard after all the business closes, a lot of things happen.”

Martha Orellano, a street vendor, told KABC the neighborhood had worsened since the pandemic.

“In today’s day and age, people are displaced with some many drugs and a lot of other things happening,” she explained. “My advice is that when you see someone like that, if they harass you, call police.”

Police said their investigation is ongoing, and they are asking for help from the public for information about the case.
