Northern California welcomed the new year with a magnitude 5.4 earthquake.

The quake hit about 9 miles southeast of Rio Dell at 10:35 am, according to the USGS.

The quake was big enough to trigger the delivery of a “Shake Alert” to cell phones.

Redwood residents reported property damage on Sunday.

More than 1,000 people lost power on Sunday.

A deadly magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck around the same location in Northern California shortly before Christmas.

More than 70,000 people were without power in Humboldt County last month after the quake.

Last month’s temblor killed two people, injured a dozen more and caused property damage.
