Welcome To Your Brief Impeachmentpalooza Break
It’s time once again for the Democratic presidential candidates to get together and kinda/sorta debate. It makes no sense to call these forums “debates” anymore, but tradition dies hard. There are a couple of things I’m actually looking forward to tonight.
Topping my list is that this will be the first debate where we will be spared the insufferable grandstanding of Beto O’Rourke. True, the others will grandstand too, but Horse Mouth was the worst. As you read this, he’s probably posting a sock change to his Instagram story because the idiot thinks people still care about him.
The best part about this particular debate is that it will provide the briefest of breaks from the impeachment drama.
It will no doubt get a mention or two, but Adam Schiff won’t be there and we should all be grateful for that.
As The New York Times notes, this has essentially distilled down to a four person race:
Mayor
Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Ind., has recently emerged as a
leader in some Iowa polls, and Senator
Bernie SandersofVermontappears re-energized by the endorsement of Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York. But the two candidates at center stage remain the same: former Vice President
Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Senator
Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. Together, these four have separated themselves from the 2020 pack.
Mayor Pete has been near the top for a while, but he has gotten more attention of late, and should be a bigger target this time around. He does seem to handle pressure so he probably won’t wilt like Kamala Harris did when she had her oh-so-brief turn in the “top tier” during a debate.
The lurking danger for Buttigieg is that this debate is being co-hosted by MSNBC and The Washington Post. Mayor Pete isn’t quite commie enough for the former, all of whom are AOC fans and will probably be in Bernie’s corner.
Of the top four, Buttigieg is the least commie and least insane. That’s a relatively low bar to clear, but it does provide him with an opportunity to win over some of the flyover country voters who are desperately clinging to Biden because they find Sanders and Warren so distasteful.
It will also be interesting to see if Kamala Harris’s smugness will be taken down a notch now that her campaign is on life support. Probably not, she just can’t help herself.
